The Department of Immigration has initiated a number of specific new measures to help address Australia’s on-going skills shortage.

Criminal offences for employers, labour suppliers and other persons
who allow non-citizens to work in Australia illegally will apply when new legislation before Parliament is passed. An estimated 60,000 foreign nationals work in breach of visa conditions or are illegally in Australia and working at any one time.
